Town of Fountain Prairie

Fountain Prairie is a 35-square-mile township on the very western edge of the Rio Community School District. It received its name from the fact that there was a spring or stream of water on every section of land except three. In January 1849, the Board of County Commissioners set off a township under the name of Fountain Prairie from the voting precinct created three years before.

One site of interest is the Nashold 20-sided barn, located on Doylestown Rd. Famous people from Fountain Prairie include Wisconsin State Senator John Q. Adams and Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge Henry P. Hughes.

Today, this is a rural township mainly involved in agriculture. Because of that, the township put together a 20-Year Land Use Plan in 1997 designed to maintain the agricultural needs while creating a welcoming atmosphere to those living and moving into the area. This map of Fountain Prairie Township shows that while it is at the furthest edge of the school district, it also has the closest access to Columbus and Hwy. 151, which goes straight through Sun Prairie and Madison. This close proximity to highway means that the people of Fountain Prairie are very well situated to embrace the advantages of living in an agricultural area as well as all the wonderful and unique opportunities our state capital has to offer.
